Roman blinds are a stunning addition to your home and can accessorise your windows perfectly, especially if you prefer a more contemporary finish.

A lot of people may think that they will have to employ someone to measure their windows in order to make their roman blinds; however, measuring your windows yourself is super straightforward and reduces costs.

What You Need To Measure For Roman Blinds

When measuring your windows for roman blinds, you don’t need much – just have the following on hand:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Step stool to reach the highest point of your window

Inside Recess Or Outside Recess?

The two steps to measure for roman blinds are very easy to follow, but it is very important to decide where you want your blinds to fit.

Inside recess is when your roman blinds will fit flush against your window, within the window recess itself.

Outside recess is when your roman blinds will sit in front of your window recess, leaving a space between the blind itself and the window. The space is usually the size of your window ledge.

First Step…

The first thing you are going to do when measuring for roman blinds is to measure the width of your window at three different points. These points are:

  1. Top of the window
  2. Middle of the window
  3. Bottom of the window

If you are going for an inside recess roman blind, then measure within the recess width ways. For outside recess roman blinds, measure your recess and add 7cm on each side for maximum light blockage.

Once you have these measurements, record the smallest measurement. This will be the width you need to submit when ordering your roman blinds.

Second Step…

The second step when measuring for your roman blinds is to measure the length of the window frame from the top of the window to the bottom.

To get the most accurate measurement for your roman blinds, measure from the top of the window to the sill.

If you are going for an in-recess roman blind, then measure within the recess from top to bottom. For outside recess roman blinds, measure from the top of the window frame to the sill and then add 10cm to the length to get maximum light blockage.

Record this measurement – this is the length you need to submit when ordering your roman blinds.

Remember to make sure that you measure the exact size of the window frame as this will ensure that your blinds look flush and fit well – there is nothing worse than having roman blinds fitted that don’t fit your windows properly; it completely wastes your money and ruins the finish of your space.

Double Check…

There is no harm in double-checking your measurements as once your roman blinds are made, it is very hard to alter them, especially if they come up small.

Better still, if there is someone at home who can double-check your measurements before you submit them and order your roman blinds, you can be sure that you’re ordering the correct size.

Measuring for roman blinds shouldn’t put you off ordering online — if you take your time to ensure that your measurements are correct, you can have roman blinds that are completely made to measure for a more affordable price, simply because you’ve taken the measurements yourself.
