At The Sewing House, we always have a few customer-favourite designers, but very few capture our customers’ attention as Ian Mankin does.

A British designer known for classic, timeless designs, Ian Mankin works with a very astute eye for detail and has an innate passion for creating stylish and practical designs.

There is one design by Ian Mankin that barely needs an introduction as it flies out of our workshop and speaks for itself: the ticking stripe.

It is very rare in the interior design world that you find a designer or design that transcends eras and can be used within both traditional and contemporary settings. However, the ticking stripe by Ian Mankin does just that.

What Is The Ticking Stripe?

Back in yesteryear, when mattresses were a relatively new concept, they were filled with things like straw and leaves – a whole manner of materials that don’t exactly scream ‘good night’s sleep’. The ticking stripe was borne from the sack used to cover the foliage within the mattress, which was called a ‘tick’.

The pattern on the tick was herringbone and prevented everything within the mattress from poking through. As time passed, the herringbone design evolved and started to include a stripe, now called a ticking stripe.

The ticking stripe changed from a practical piece of fabric to a sought-after pattern; Ian Mankin acknowledged the beauty of the ticking stripe over 35 years ago and has become synonymous with the design ever since.

Made from either 100% cotton or a blend of cotton and linen, Ian Mankin ticking stripe blinds and curtains have a certain density to them that comes from how the pattern is made, which is exceptionally unique for the modern day.

How Is The Ticking Stripe Made?

Ian Mankin has a very meticulous and traditional way of making their fabrics, using colour-woven materials that have been made in-house.

A lot of people think the ticking stripe by Ian Mankin is simply a printed stripe; however, each stripe is made on a loom by hand using dyed yarns. Simply looking closely at the fabric and the herringbone combined with the ticking stripe introduces a whole new level of pattern and quality.

Hand-woven ticking stripes mean quality, no tracking and durability that you just don’t get with printed striped fabric; the Ian Mankin ticking stripe is quite simply second to none.

Mix It Up

If you are looking to use the Ian Mankin ticking stripe for your curtains or blinds, don’t be fooled into thinking that you must stick to just one pattern; there are many ways you can mix and match different coloured ticking stripes to create a modern twist on an absolute classic.

However, if you prefer the smart subtlety of one ticking stripe in one shade, you can be sure that you will invest in curtains and blinds that will be timeless in any space.
